Chickpeas are a low shrub with a height of about 50 – 60 cm. It blooms with white flowers with thin bluish threads. It grows mainly in tropical and subtropical climates. It is not pretentious and withstands drought and rain. About two-thirds of the world’s chickpea production comes from India. According to the shape and size of the seeds, the varieties are divided into two large groups.

Desi – the varieties have small angular seeds, colored in yellow, brown, green or even black. They are typical of India, Iran, Ethiopia and Mexico, and this is the more popular type of chickpeas.

The second group are kabuli – varieties typical of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. This is actually the well-known type of chickpea in Europe.

Chickpeas are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and fiber and have numerous benefits for our health. Not only does it improve digestion, but it helps maintain weight and reduces the risk of certain diseases. It has an impressive nutritional profile.

Its main health benefits are due to the rich content of nutrients such as fiber, manganese, iron, phosphate, calcium and magnesium. It is an excellent source of manganese, which is essential for many enzymes important for energy production and antioxidant protections. One cup of chickpeas provides about 84.5% of the daily needs of this mineral. It can also increase your energy due to its high iron content. This is especially important for women during menstruation, pregnancy and breastfeeding and for growing children.

Despite the many benefits of chickpeas, if you suffer from gout, unfortunately you should avoid it because it is rich in purines.

With the protein and fiber in chickpeas you can suppress your appetite, which makes it great for healthy eating, inclusion in diets and regimens. Protein and fiber work synergistically to slow down digestion, which in turn helps to increase the feeling of satiety. A lesser known fact is that protein can increase the levels of hormones that reduce appetite in the body. This will automatically reduce your calorie intake during the day, as the combination of protein and fiber will keep you full.
